PODCAST SERIES OVERVIEW

Little Talks That Make a Big Difference is presented in a sequence of four learning sessions. Think of each episode as a chapter and the entire suite of four episodes as an audio book that focuses on the knowledge, skills and infusion strategies necessary for successful facilitation of the In the Middle curriculum, and social and emotional learning in general.

THE FOUR PODCASTS:

#1 Emotional Safety: A Blueprint For Success

Often the idea of safety within a school conjures up images of single points of entry, name tags, sign-in desks and zero tolerance for fighting or other aggressive acts. These images focus solely upon physical safety. In this episode of the Little Talks series, we examine how by meeting the emotional needs of our students, we are creating the blueprint for emotional safety.

We are interested in your opinions of the first podcast, Emotional Safety.  When you have listened to the podcast & read through the Try This activities in the field guide, please take a moment to answer a few questions. This survey is anonymous and should take less than five minutes.

#3 Emotional Imprinting: A Roadmap to Understanding Ourselves and Others

In the first 15 years of our life, we have experiences which create our value system. These values drive our behaviors and are often unconscious. In this episode of the Little Talks series, we examine what emotional imprints are and how they can get in the way of building healthy and productive relationships with other. By identifying our imprints, we can manage our emotions more effectively, especially during times of stress.

#4 Intention: Focusing On What You Want

Intention as a process is a focusing device or self-promise meter for what we want to achieve or how we want to carry ourselves as professionals. In this episode of The Little Talks Series, we reflect on the power of intention as a mechanism to stay the course creating emotional safety for our students. By holding an intention, we remind ourselves of what is important as we teach our students to do the same.

in the middle - a podcast series for middle grade students

Paul Brown and TEI Director David Levine discuss the In The Middle podcast series

PODCAST OVERVIEW

In the Middle is a social and emotional learning (SEL) curriculum for middle grade students. This audio based curriculum provides an opportunity for students to use their listening, speaking and writing skills to awaken their sense of empathy and compassion for others. While there are many definitions of empathy, in this curriculum it is defined as having the social perspective to move from your place of perception of the world to a middle ground of understanding another’s perception.  It is not necessarily coming to an agreement with another but to an understanding and appreciation for an alternative viewpoint and life story.

THE STORIES:

Story 1: Howard Gray

This is a story about a boy, Howard Gray, who was bullied and victimized by others because he was different, and how one of his classmates, who wanted to help, did not because he was concerned about his social standing.

Story 2: Little Things Are Big Things

This is a story about two boys, Sam, a five-year-old, and Adrian, a nine-year-old, and how one of them made a difference in the other’s life.

Story 3: I Lost a Friend

This is a story about two life-long friends who had a falling out after they moved up to middle school.
