For Immediate Release:

Teaching Empathy Institute’s A Year of Belonging wins Nautilus Award

July, 2020
Stone Ridge, NY:

At a time when we are distant, in body and to some degree, in mind, the time is right for the publication of A Year of Belonging; and the Nautilus Book Awards agrees. Nautilus bestowed the Silver Award to Hudson Valley author, David Levine, for his book: A Year of Belonging: Fifty-Two Reflections and Practices for Educators. David wrote this book as an inspirational companion to his professional development program, Creating a School of Belonging, currently utilizedin its online format by educators and their students in the Kingston City School District in Kingston, NY.

Announced by Nautilus here – http://nautilusbookawards.com/2019-silver-winners/ – under Relationships and Communication, David is honored to receive this award alongside such preeminent authors and professionals as Barbara Kingsolver, Rachel Maddow, and Marianne Williamson. He hopes his book can provide inspiration and comfort, as well as challenge anyone who works with children, or is a parent or caregiver, to view and practice their work in a new light – steeping it in empathy, listening, and dialogue. An Author’s Spotlight video interview can also be found here: http://nautilusbookawards.com/author-spotlight-videos/

In the book, after presenting an inspirational quote from people in the fields of education, psychology, politics and humanities, David translates these insights into educational artistic practices. Some are reflective tools for educators, while others are specific practices for the children with whom they work.

David has also adapted many of the book’s practices, offering them as daily quotes and practices to parents and caregivers on TEI’s School of Belonging website (www.schoolofbelonging.org).

During more regular times, the book serves as a companion to David’s School of Belonging program that consists of an online course curriculum for educators and their students, in-person professional development offerings, and printed resources for schools.

After working with school districts across the country as a teacher, trainer, facilitator, designer and coach for 32 years, David Levine founded Teaching Empathy Institute, a project of the Tides Center, with the intention of making a real difference in the lives of children and the adults who work with them. What began as a series of empathy workshops and professional development offerings in the Hudson Valley, has expanded to include over 100 school districts across the United States, and as far away as Ghana, South Africa, England, Wales and United Arab Emirates.
