Teaching Empathy Institute works to establish emotionally and physically safe learning communities for elementary, middle and high school students and the adults who work with them. Working in the Hudson Valley of New York, TEI creates tailor-made programs designed to foster dialogue about social culture building while strengthening the capacity for the infusion of empathy and compassion into all aspects of the learning experience.

A resource for creating the conditions of emotional safety, inclusion, and belonging

Creating A School of Belonging

School of Belonging implementation focuses on creating a culture of emotional safety and healthy relationships at all school levels: school leaders, teachers, mental health professionals, para-professionals, and, of course, students.

Resources include Field Guide to a School of Belonging: 2020 Nautilus Book Awards Winner, 2021 American Best Book Awards Finalist, 2022/23 Indie Next Generation Book Awards Finalist.

What students need and get:

Students achieve to their fullest academically and socially while developing the skills and perspective to manage emotions successfully during stressful and difficult times. The practices explored in School of Belonging promote development of key life skills, which are:

  • focus & self-control
  • perspective taking
  • listening
  • conflict resolution
  • working effectively with others
  • planning, goal-setting & problem solving
A School of Belonging focuses on creating a culture of emotional safety in which healthy relationships are key

School of Belonging responds to what school staff say they want and need:

  • practical training, asynchronously and/or hybrid, designed to meet the variety of learning styles of participants
  • relevant tools that are easily accessible and can be embedded into instructional practice
  • a program that is process-oriented rather than prescriptive
  • opportunities to interact and learn alongside colleagues throughout the process, with on-going support built directly into the learning design
  • a clear rationale for the training and emphasis on life-skills
